New Giclee Prints Available Soon.

September 2013. I am just in the process of writing the descriptive texts for fifteen new Giclee prints that will be available in late October. These include four complex Tibetan thangkas by Sunlal Ratna Tamang, three of which are accurate copies of masterpieces from the Potala Palace in Lhasa. These new Giclee Print images are:

In Tibetan Art Galleries

  1. The Medicine Buddha Lineage: Sunlal's copy from the Potala thangka, which depicts the Medicine Buddha on his complex enlightenment throne as the centre image. Above him are thirty-three lineage holders of the four medical tantras, and below him are the protectors Palden Lhamo, Garuda, Rahula, and Shanglon along with the eight unusual protector deities of the Medical Tantras. Available as a large or medium sized Giclee print.
  2. Manjushri and the lineage of Phonology Masters: Sunlal's copy from the Potala thangka, which depicts orange Manjushri-Manjugosha on his complex enlightenment thrones as the central figure. Surrounding him are thirty-four gurus, bodhisattvas and lineage holders of the Indo-Tibetan phonology traditions, along with two special protectors in the lower corners. Available as a large or medium sized Giclee print.
  3. Palden Lhamo and her retinue: Sunlal's copy from the Potala thangka, which depicts Palden Lhamo (Shri Devi) Magzor Gyalmo as the central figure, accompanied by her crocodile-headed and lion-headed attendants, along with the goddesses of the Four Seasons that emanate from the crown of Lhamo's head. Above Lhamo are Tsongkhapa and his two main disciples, and below Lhamo are the Five Sisters of Longevity and the twelve Tenma Goddesses, all of whom ride upon their different animal mounts or vehicles.   4. Vajrabhairava (Yamantaka) as a 'Solitary Hero' (Ekavira): Sunlal's depiction of this wrathful buffalo-headed yidam or 'meditational deity', with thirty-four arms, sixteen feet and nine faces, who appears at the centre of this composition. Above Yamantaka appears Manjushri with two lineage holders, and below him are Yama Dhamaraja, Six-armed Mahakala and Palden Lhamo Magzor Gyalmo. Available as a large or medium sized Giclee print.
  5. The Thirty-five Buddhas of Confession: this thangka by Dorje Tamang depicts the Thirty-five Buddhas of Confession, with Shakyamuni appearing upon his enlightenment throne with his two main disciples at the centre. The other thirty-four Buddhas surround Shakyamuni, and this composition also includes the deities Vajradhara, Vajrasattva, White Tara, and the lion-mounted wealth god Vaishravana. This image is currently available as an A3 Digital Art Print, but will now be available as a large or medium sized Giclee print.

In Newar Tantric Art Galleries

  1. B/W White Tara (Saptalocana Tara), by Hari Prasad Vaidya: a lovely black and white depiction of seven-eyed (saptalocana) White Tara, which depicts this longevity goddess upon her ornate enlightenment throne. Available as a medium or small sized Giclee print.
  2. Vidyadhari-Vajrayogini (sepia), by Sukha Raj: an exquisite depiction in sepia of the flying goddess or sky-going dakini, Vidyadhari, who is one of the four principle aspects of Vajrayogini in the Newar Buddhist Tradition. Available as a medium or small sized Giclee print.
  3. B/W Vajradhara and Consort, by Sukha Raj: a lovely black and white painting of Vajradhara (Dorje Chang) and his white consort appearing in sexual union upon their enlightenment throne. Vajradhara is shown in profile, identical to the form in which he manifests as Urgyen Dorje Chang, one of Padmasambhava's eight manifestations. Available as a medium or small sized Giclee print.
  4. Thousand-armed Shristhikanta Lokeshvara, by Raju Shakya: this complex and extremely rare composition depicts Red Avalokiteshvara as the 'Glorious Creator' with a hundred-and-twenty heads and a thousand hands, each of which holds a different deity or attribute. Lokeshvara is surrounded by thirty-one important gods and goddesses from the Hindu-Buddhist pantheon, which all sprang from different parts of his divine bodily form. Available as a large or medium sized Giclee print.
  5. Maitreya Buddha, by Sukha Raj: based upon an original composition by Siddhimuni Shakya, this painting shows Maitreya as the Buddha of the future era, seated in western-style posture upon his throne, and bearing his twin attributes of a wheel and a water-flask upon his hand-held lotuses. The kneeling forms of White Tara and Green Tara flank him, and the painting's outer torana is decorated with mythical creatures. Available as a medium or small sized Giclee print.
  6. Lakshmi, by Dinesh Charan Shrestha: Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and good fortune, is shown here in her four-armed Newar aspect. She is beautiful, peaceful and golden in complexion, adorned with all manner of divine silks and jewel ornaments. With her upper right and left hands she holds the auspicious Newar attributes of a golden mirror and a container for vermilion powder (sinhamu). With her lower left hand she make the abhaya-mudra of fearlessness, and with her lower right hand she makes the open-palmed varada-mudra of bestowing wealth and blessings.   7. Shiva and Family (Shiva Parivar), by Dinesh Charan Shrestha: this intricate composition shows white Shiva and his green consort Parvati seated together in the loving embrace of the divine father and mother, with their two sons, white Ganesha and red Kumara, appearing below them. An extremely complex outer torana of mythical creatures and auspicious symbols surrounds the central composition. Available as a medium or small sized Giclee print.
  8. Durga Mahishasura, by Sundar Sinkhwal: based upon an original composition by Siddhimuni Shakya, this painting shows the 'Great Goddess' Durga in the act of slaying the buffalo-demon, Mahishasura. Durga has eight arms and rides upon her lion vehicle as she subjugates the blue asura demon that has arisen from the body of a slain buffalo, an event that is celebrated annually in the great autumnal Durga Puja festival. The outer torana of this composition is decorated with floral motifs. Available as a medium or small sized Giclee print.
  9. Annapurna, by Udaya Charan Shrestha: this beautiful painting depicts the eight-armed form of Annapurna, the goddess of nourishment and plenty. Annapurna sits upon the coils of a great naga-serpent upon a pink lotus amidst turbulent water. She wears the divine silks, ornaments and attributes of a tantric goddess, and behind her fiery aura appears her symbolic ritual vase and the three-tiered roof of her temple. Available as a small sized Giclee print.
  10. Amitayus (sepia), by Devendra Man Sinkhwal: Amitayus, meaning 'boundless life', is the longevity aspect of Amitabha Buddha. In this sepia composition he sits upon his lotus and peacock throne in the dhyana-mudra of meditation, with his palms supporting a jewel-topped flask filled with amrita or immortal nectar. The back of his enlightenment throne depicts two young gods holding a crossbeam that supports an upper torana of makaras, naga-serpents, and the crowning form of garuda. Available as a medium or small sized Giclee print.

Other Forthcoming Tibetan Art Prints

Later in this year I am planning to make a further set of Tibetan Giclee prints available, which will mainly be gold on black compositions of important yidam and wrathful protector deities. These will include:

  • The gold-on-black Karma Kagyu assembly of Mahakala and Mahakali in face-to-face union, which depicts the central figures of Bernagchen, the 'black-cloaked' dwarf protector, seated upon the lap of mule-mounted Palden Rangjung Gyalmo in reversed sexual union (yum-yab). Surrounding them are eleven male and female protector deities, along with Vajravarahi, Jinasagara, Vajradhara and four lineage masters. This image is currently available as a postcard, and will be available as a large or medium sized Giclee print.
  • The gold-on-black assembly of lion-headed Kshetrapala (Zhing-skyong) and his consort, who are both mounted upon horses and appear with their retinue of eight directional protector deities. Available as a large or medium sized Giclee print.
  • A gold-on-black assembly of Nyingma yidam and protector deities, which include: Legden Mahakala, Maning Mahakala, Four-armed Mahakala, Mahadeva, Rahula, Ekajati, Gyalpo Marutse, Dorje Legpa and Vajrakila. Available as a large or medium sized Giclee print.
  • A gold-on-black composition of the wrathful black Chod goddess, Troma Nagmo, surrounded by her mandala retinue of eight directional dakinis and four animal-headed gatekeepers. Above Troma Nagmo appears Vajravarahi, white Samantabhadra and six Indian and Tibetan lineage holders, and below her are five protectors of the Nyingma tradition. This image is currently available in the form of a colour postcard, and will be available as a large or medium sized gold-on-black Giclee print.
  • A gold-on-black composition depicting Citipati, the 'dancing skeletons' in union, with their skeletal palace behind, and Chakrasamvara, Machig Labdron, and Tsongkhapa with his two main disciples above. This painting is copied from a colour thangka in the Potala Palace. The image is currently available as a postcard, and will be available as a large or medium sized Giclee print.
  • A gold-on-black thangka of thirty-four armed and nine-headed Vajrabhairava (Yamantaka) in union with his consort, with the outer, inner and secret forms of Yama Dharmaraja appearing below. This image is currently available as a postcard, and will be available as a large or medium sized Giclee print.
  • A colour thangka of Dorje Drollo encircled by eight dancing Dakas and Dakinis, with five deities and Nyingma lineage holders above, the garuda-mounted 'black-red butcher' below, and the Four Great Guardian Kings in the foreground. Available as a large or medium sized Giclee print.
